Teatro Vivo kicks off its 8th season, entitled Nacido en Texas,(Born in Texas) with the world premiere of the 2008 National Latino Playwright award winning play, Fantasmaville. Written by Austinite Raul Garza and directed by David Yeakle, the play shines a light on the sensitive subject of the gentrification of East Austin. With a strong dose of comedy, Fantasmaville captures the dilemma of urban Chicanos caught between their treasured cultural past and their assimilated present.
Fantasmaville humorously examines the love/hate relationship Latino-Americans have with the ghosts of past people and places. When a world-weary Latina, Celeste, and her Anglo husband, Martin, desire to experience a sense of community, they return home to the urban neighborhood where they both grew up. They resist the surge of gentrification. Colorful local characters, including an advice-spinning “Mexican Spirit Guide” who takes on the form of a human-sized raccoon, complicate the couple's return. While facing the threat of a yuppie-centric dog park encroaching on her neighborhood, Celeste discovers the secret of her heritage, her purpose, and her longing for a sense of home.
Raul Garza is a Texas-based writer whose screenplay Digging Up Roots was featured at Teatro Humanidad’s Play Festival. His work has been performed by the Latino Comedy Project at SketchFests in Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver. A veteran of the advertising industry, Raul has created national commercials for clients including McDonald’s, Reebok and Miller Lite, and is co-founder of TKO Advertising in Austin, TX. Fantasmaville is Garza’s first full-length play.
Teatro Vivo’s artistic director, Rupert Reyes commented that Garza’s authentic fresh comedic voice will gives the sense that he intimately knows the characters he writes. Garza uses a fluent Chicano tongue, dancing effortlessly between English and Spanish. This production is can be enjoyed by the entire Austin community, including non-Spanish speakers.
Teatro Vivo is delighted to be working with critically acclaimed director David Yeakle, who was recently nominated for multiple B. Iden Payne Awards for his production of The Red Balloon.
Teatro Vivo will be making its return to the Long Center, after selling out its last production, Petra’s Sueño at the prestigious venue. The veteran theatre company will stage two other productions this season: Rupert Reyes’ latest work, Crossing the Rio and Tripas by Lisa Walden Cortez.

Teatro Vivo inicia su 8va. Temporada, titulada Nacido en Texas (Born in Texas) con el estreno mundial de la obra ganadora al premio National Latino Playwright de 2008, Fantasmaville. Escrita por el Austinense Raul Garza y dirigida por David Yeakle, Fantasmaville iluminará y entretendrá al público presentando como foco de atención el delicado tema del aburguesamiento del Este de Austin. Con una muy buena dosis de comedia, Fantasmaville captura el dilema de los Chicanos urbanos atrapados entre su preciado pasado cultural y su presente asimilado.
Con gran humor, Fantasmaville examina la relación amor-odio que los latinoamericanos tienen con los fantasmas de las personas y lugares del pasado. Cuando una hastiada Chicana, Celeste, y su esposo anglo, Martin, desean experimentar un sentido de comunidad, regresan a casa al vecindario urbano en donde crecieron. Se resisten al surgimiento del aburguesamiento. Los coloridos personajes locales, incluyendo a un “guía espiritual mexicano” que da consejos y toma la forma de un mapache del tamaño de un humano, complican el regreso de la pareja. Al enfrentarse con la amenaza de que un parque para perros en donde se reúnan los yuppies invada su colonia, Celeste descubre el secreto de su herencia, su propósito y su anhelo por sentirse como en casa.
Raul Garza es un escritor que vive en Texas cuyo trabajo ha sido llevado a escena por the Latino Comedy Project en Sketch Fests en Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle y Vancouver. Como veterano en la industria de publicidad, Raul ha creado comerciales nacionales para clientes que incluyen a McDonald’s, Reebok y Miller Lite, y es cofundador de TKO Advertising en Austin, TX. Fantasmaville es la primera obra larga de Garza.
El director artístico de Teatro Vivo, Rupert Reyes, comentó que “la voz de comedia fresca y auténtica de Garza dará la impresión de que conoce íntimamente a los personajes que escribe. Garza utiliza una fluida lengua Chicana que baila sin tropiezos entre el inglés y el español.” Esta nueva producción podrá ser disfrutada por toda la comunidad de Austin, incluyendo a los que no hablan español.
Es un honor para Teatro Vivo estar trabajando con el director aclamado por la crítica, David Yeakle, quien recientemente fue nominado para múltiples premios B. Iden Payne Awards por su producción de The Red Balloon.
